Our story

Why We Exist

Room24.mn exists to change that. We are Mongolia's first bilingual, feminist, community-driven newsroom, founded by women journalists who believe that an equal society requires inclusive, representative media.

We produce journalism that centres women's experiences, interrogates injustice and stereotypes, and elevates women's leadership across every sphere. Our platform is a space for critical inquiry, collective action, and feminist storytelling.

Our Mission

At Room24, we equip women with accurate information and practical resources to support their equal participation in democracy. Our mission is to create a space where women can thrive, lead, and drive meaningful change. We pursue this through:

  • Publishing in-depth, analytical journalism that explores how key policies, events, and decisions impact women's lives.

  • Highlighting the stories of trailblazing women in male-dominated fields such as politics, business, and technology.

  • Building a digital platform that fosters community, dialogue, and solidarity among women.

  • Collaborating with international organisations, civil society groups, and fellow newsrooms to promote gender-ethical journalism that fairly represents women and other marginalised communities.

  • Providing training and consulting services that help women gain greater visibility and more accurate representation in the media.

What Does Room24 Mean?

Our name, Room24, is inspired by Virginia Woolf's iconic essay A Room of One's Own.

In Mongolia, about 400 newsrooms serve a population of just over 3.5 million. Yet, until now, none have been dedicated to feminist journalism or focused on the needs and voices of women. Room24 was created to fill that gap.

Room2Thrive

A space where women can access the knowledge, tools, and inspiration they need to live fully and confidently.

Room4Change

A collective space for building a more equal, democratic society — together.

Our Values

At Room24, we strive to be a trusted source of news and information, a reliable guide, and a strong ally for women to advocate for better representation in decision-making and media in Mongolia. Our core values:

Excellence

We are committed to excellence in everything we do — from producing high-quality journalism to delivering impactful training, consulting, and communication services.

Human Rights–Centred Approach

We work to build a society where human rights, justice, and gender equality are fully upheld. We actively challenge discrimination, bias, and harmful stereotypes.

Community First

We see our readers and members not just as an audience, but as a community. We believe in two-way communication — listening to the needs, ideas, and feedback of our community and placing their voices at the heart of our work.

Collaboration

We value partnerships and actively collaborate with individuals and organisations that share our mission and feminist values.

Transparency

Our community deserves to know who supports and funds Room24. We clearly label any sponsored content or advertisements and stand firmly against the common practice of unmarked paid content and hidden advertising in Mongolia.

Independence

We maintain full editorial independence, free from political, corporate, or commercial influence.

Accountability

We take responsibility for both our achievements and our mistakes. We acknowledge that errors may happen, and when they do, we correct them promptly, transparently, and with integrity.

Our Team

Room24.mn was founded by a team of experienced journalists, media trainers, and gender equality advocates who have worked in Mongolia's media sector for more than a decade. We came together with a shared vision: to build a feminist newsroom that represents and uplifts the voices of women.

Room24 is Mongolia's first newsroom committed to both representative and impact-driven journalism. Our goal is to challenge dominant narratives, hold power to account, and make space for more inclusive public conversations — all while upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity.

We believe the media has a responsibility not only to inform, but also to reflect the diversity of the society it serves. At Room24, we are proud to be part of a growing movement to reimagine what journalism can look like when it's led by women, grounded in feminist values, and committed to justice.

51%

Women make up 51% of Mongolia's population, graduate from university at higher rates than men, and lead key sectors such as civil society, health, and education. Yet they remain under-represented in political and economic decision-making, and their voices are still marginal in mainstream media. The statistics tell a clear story and underscore the urgent need for change.

21.5%

Women earn 21.5% less than men — a pay gap in Mongolia is growing and now exceeds the global average.

30%

Although women make up 64% of Mongolia's public servants, they hold just 30% of senior executive positions.

273 minuts

Mongolian women spend an average of 273 minutes — or 4.5 hours — per day on unpaid care work, twice as much as men.

¼

Just one in five people featured in political news coverage in Mongolia is a woman

25%

Mongolia was the first Asian country to legalise women's suffrage in 1924, yet women now hold only 25% of seats in Parliament, below the global average.

0

Mongolia has never had a woman serve as President, Prime Minister, or Speaker of Parliament.

1 in 3

One in three women has experienced physical or sexual violence.
